Ozone Therapy

Therapy using ozone, a highly active form of pure oxygen, is a natural therapy that is increasingly used in medicine and dentistry to regenerate damaged tissue and accelerate healing.

Since damaged tissue is poorly oxygenated, the application of ozone helps cells assimilate oxygen, which is vital for their regeneration, and thus restores their health and balance.

Ozone therapy removes toxins from the body, reduces inflammation, regulates tissue pH and restores blood circulation in the damaged area – in other words, it allows the body to heal itself.

In addition to being effective, ozone therapy is a completely painless and safe procedure intended for patients who want to resume their daily activities as soon as possible after dental surgery – with no discomfort or pain. At the Ortoimplant Dental SPA clinic, we have already been providing this service for seven years.

“As one of the first dental clinics in Croatia to introduce the use of ozone in dental therapy, we see faster recovery of our patients on a daily basis, by some estimates even eight times faster, as well as an absence of pain and infections. In addition to endodontics and implantology, we also use ozone to treat herpes, canker sores, and mucous membrane mycoses, since it enables us to feed cells with oxygen directly, even cells located ten centimetre deep in tissue that can be reached by large probes,” said Dr Zdenko Trampuš, DDS, creator of the Ortoimplant Dental SPA concept.

How does ozone therapy work?

Ozone therapy activates immunity with regard to infectious diseases, increases the supply of oxygen to cells, increases tissue blood flow, releases cellular growth factors, stimulates regeneration of damaged tissue, and dramatically reduces or even eliminates pain by acting on pain receptors. Clinical studies have proven its effectiveness in dental procedures and treating cystitis, chronic hepatitis, herpes infections, diabetes and macular degeneration.

What is medical ozone?

An atom of oxygen is electron-deficient, which means that it’s very unstable and is not found in nature on its own; instead, it mainly forms a stable O2 molecule – the oxygen molecule found in our atmosphere. Apart from O2, a certain number of oxygen atoms in nature combine into O3 molecules – that is, ozone molecules – which contain three oxygen atoms and act as a powerful biological stimulant.

Medical ozone is made by passing oxygen through a BIOZONE device where it splits into atoms due to the action of a high-frequency electromagnetic field, much like in nature, finally forming a mixture of oxygen and ozone used for therapeutic purposes.

Using ozone therapy in dentistry

Although ozone therapy has long been successfully used for cosmetic purposes, its use had to be supported by scientific evidence in order for it to reach dental practice, and high standards had to be set for its applicability as supportive therapy in many conventional dental therapies where it shows a number of greater benefits:

  • prophylaxis and treatment of dental caries,

  • treatment of mucous membranes – canker sores, herpes (herpes zoster and labial herpes), fungal infections,

  • periodontal treatment,

  • in endodontics for the disinfection of the root canal,

  • whitening of teeth and dental fillings,

  • in oral surgery after tooth extraction and for rinsing during surgery,

  • treatment of halitosis (bad breath),

  • in implantology for the treatment and prophylaxis of periimplantitis,

  • treatment of damaged soft tissue (radiation therapy, pressure ulcers related to the use of dental prostheses),

  • treatment of slow-healing and infected wounds and inflammatory processes,

  • reduction in the use of anaesthetic drugs and pain relief after a dental procedure,

  • inactivates 99% of bacteria in caries,

  • caries treatment and pretreatment in sealing fistulas in paediatric dentistry.

Biological action of ozone

Ozone has several well-researched effects on the human body, among which are immunostimulatory effects, analgesic, detoxifying, antimicrobial, and regenerative effects. By activating the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids, and increasing the amount of ribosomes and mitochondria in the cells, ozone promotes the regeneration of tissue and organs.

The antimicrobial action of ozone is selective and limited to microbial cells, as well as highly effective against antibiotic-resistant bacteria. A high concentration of ozone kills bacteria very quickly, making it an effective bactericidal agent for all types of pathogenic microorganisms – bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites. For comparison, the action of a single ozone molecule corresponds to that of 3,000 to 10,000 molecules of chlorine, and destroys pathogens as much as 3,500 times faster. Studies have found that it only takes ten seconds for ozone to destroy as much as 99% of bacteria, viruses and fungi in tissue.

Ozone acts on both cellular and humoral immunity, as it stimulates the proliferation of immunocompetent cells and immunoglobulin synthesis, while also activating macrophage function and increasing the sensitivity of microorganisms to phagocytosis. In response to oxygen therapy, our immune system creates cytokines, information carriers, which in turn precipitate other immune reactions and thus strengthen the immune response.

When is ozone therapy not recommended?

Although the application of ozone is safe, doctors advise against its use in pregnancy and in cases of favism, hyperthyroidism, severe anaemia, myasthenia gravis, acute alcohol poisoning, heart attack, internal bleeding, and ozone allergy. Since the use of ozone in dentistry is limited to a small area and short time period, any side effects and contraindications are minimal.
